You sat in the common room for Ravenclaw, trying to study for an upcoming test that you had. You pulled your legs up close to your chest as you tried to pay attention. Some of the other students were also studying while others were talking quietly. This was how the Ravenclaw common room was normally at this time. The time right after dinner and before heading off to bed. The fire roared quietly and it was a calming atmosphere.
You looked over your notes, trying to soak up all the information that you could before you had to take your test in potions tomorrow. Snape liked to grade harshly and you had to make sure that you did well on this test. You hated to get bad grades, even if it was a good grade to some. That was how you got sorted into Ravenclaw. You sighed, twirling the pen in your hand. For some reason, you were having some trouble concentrating. The atmosphere was calm, but for some reason, your mind just keeps wandering. You just didn't want to study even though you knew you needed to.
You heard footsteps behind you and turned around to see Luna looking at you. She smiled and walked toward you, hands clasped behind her back. You and Luna were best friends. You met the first year both of you had entered Hogwarts. You met on the train and had been friends ever since. Both of you always acted like girlfriends, but neither of you had ever said anything. It just happened. Your relationship moved forward but neither of you ever said anything about it.
“(Y/N), what are you doing?” Luna asked, glancing over your shoulder. She saw that you had your notebook out in front of you. She saw a few drawings that she had drawn while the two of you were in class together. The two of you had most of your classes together. The only class the two of you didn't have together was Herbology. You were really lucky that you had your best friend in almost all of your classes. It was good you were in classes together, because you worked well with each other. You helped Luna stay on track when her mind started to wander. She helped you keep yourself entertained when you thought you were going to die of boredom. Both of you were a perfect pair. No one could describe how the two of you interacted together.
“Trying to study for a test. I want to get a good grade on it. I don't want to fail it.” You said, narrowing your eyes at your notebook. You were having a hard time studying. You wanted to lay down but you knew you hadn't studied enough to ace this test. You couldn't get anything wrong on this test. You had to prove to Snape that you were good at making potions.
“You always do good on your tests, (Y/N). I can't remember the last time that you got something wrong on a test. “ Luna rested her head on your shoulder, a small smile on her face. You always studied too much in her opinion. She would rather you go for a walk together and see if you could find any magical creatures. It was too late to do that now, but the two of you could always play wizards chess. Anything that Luna could do to get you to relax.
“But Snape has it out for me. He'll try to figure out a way to ruin my grade, even if I'm studying all night! I can't get a bad grade, Luna. I just can't. My parents want me to get the best marks I can get so I'll be ready for the N.E.W.T.S.” You glanced up at Luna, her soft features looked so beautiful in the firelight. You wished you had time to admire them but you had to study. You could admire her looks another time.
“Fine if you insist on studying. You have an hour and then it is off to be. Got it?” Luna said and you nodded. Even though you would like to study for longer than an hour, it would do. You always wanted to make sure that Luna was happy, which wasn't a hard thing to do. You went back to studying while Luna played with your hair. You wondered how the other students looked at the two of you. Did they think that you were a couple or just friends? You wondered that as well, making it harder and harder to study. You couldn't focus on the words anymore, just the thoughts of you and Luna actually being a couple or not.
You knew that it shouldn't bug you this much but it did. You just wanted to know for sure where the two of you stood together. You acted like you were a couple but why didn't Luna call you here girlfriend? Was she not proud of you? No, that couldn't be it. She hung all over you in the hallway so that wasn't right. Maybe she just didn't feel like she needed to use a word to describe the two of you. That sounded like that could be right, it sounded like Luna. You weren't sure though. You couldn't help but worry that maybe you were trying to take things too far. You should try to talk to her about it.
“Hey, Luna...?” You asked, clearing your throat nervously. You glanced around, noticing that most of the other students had gone to bed. That made you feel better as you looked up at Luna. If something happened, whether good or bad, the others wouldn't see it. Even if they did, they probably wouldn't care. That didn't help you from thinking the worst though.
“Yeah?” She looked down at you, a calm expression on her face. She must have been lost in her own thoughts as she played with your hair.
“Are we...Well, are we, you know, d-dating..?” You asked quietly, shaking. This was the moment where your world could come crashing down. If she didn't feel the same way about you and thought you were creepy for asking, what would you do then? You would feel horrible...Your heart would break right then and there.
“Dating? Well...I never really thought about it...” She said, tilting her head to the side, “Do you want us to be dating?”
You weren't expecting her to say that. The choice was yours. Did you want to date her? Of course, you did, you felt it in your heart whenever you were around here. You didn't get nervous, like butterflies in your stomach, but you felt a warm sensation. You felt comforted and loved around her, unlike how you felt around many others.
“I think I do.” You nodded, slowly calming down. There was nothing for you to be nervous about. You knew Luna wasn't going to be mean, no matter what questions you asked to her. She was just such a nice person. Sometimes it was hard realizing that Luna really existed. A girl so nice and perfect like her, you just had a hard time believing she was real and was your maybe girlfriend.
“Well then, we can be dating.” She smiled, running her hands through your hair. Hearing her soft voice say that made your heart jump in your chest. You were really dating each other. You couldn't believe that amount of weight which was taken off of your chest after hearing that. You felt so happy at that moment, you felt like you had just found the snitch and won the game.
“Now, you need to go to bed. It's late and we have classes tomorrow.” Luna said, helping you clean up where you were studying. You were fine with not studying. You were even fine if you failed your test that you had tomorrow. Just knowing that you were dating Luna made you feel as if it didn't matter. It was just one test. Just like Luna said, you normally got good grades.
You walked back to the beds, changing into your pajamas. You and Luna went to sleep, both having wonderful dreams of each other.
