Warning(s): This will be a slight series, but not really. I just plan on writing multiple one-shots and stuff, just using the same Reader character.
Title: The Thief's Bodyguard
Pairing: James Buchanan Barnes (A.k.a Bucky) x Reader
Fandom: Avengers
Word Count: 1,395

Running was something that you were always used to. You weren't a fighter, HYDRA hadn't made you that way. You were their thief and Bucky was your bodyguard. When he wasn't on one of his own missions, HYDRA would send him with you to go and retrieve a piece of data, or whatever they wanted. Unlike Bucky who had been brought to HYDRA once he was grown, you were brought as a child. You were three when they got their hands on you. Your mother had to sell you to them for money. Your parents never cared about you.

Terrible things had happened to you throughout all of your life, but you got used to all the pain. You met Bucky the first time when you were a teen, but had only started seeing him normally now that you were in your early twenties. HYDRA had been ejecting you with a serum to re-write your DNA and now, you were considered to be a mutant. You were called Cheshire because you were able to appear and disappear like the cat from Alice in Wonderland.

Yes, running was a normal thing for you, but you weren't used to running from HYDRA. You never thought that you were going to be running with the Winter Solider, away from the people who you had been around all your life. They were all you knew, but you were still running away. You knew that they were wrong and horrible people because of what they had done to you and so many people. Yet, it was still hard to leave the only people who seemed to semi-accept you. Even if they were just using you, at least they acted like they enjoyed your company.

But, someone on one of his good days where he knew who he was (as much as he could remember), he had convinced you that you should try running off with him. He had said something about Captain America convincing him, even if it wasn't through solely words. You knew Bucky had been sent to hurt Captain America, but you had assumed that it was going to be a normal mission for the man. You didn't think it would change how he thought about the world or give him the strength to try and leave HYDRA for good.

Two pairs of feet were pounding against the floor, followed be a bunch of quieter footfalls, coming from the rushing people who were a ways behind. You didn't know what the two of you were going to do and you were starting to panic. This wasn't like a mission when you ran. At least during those missions, you knew you could return to HYDRA if you survived. You had no where to go once you had gotten away from the base.

Bucky's metal arm wrapped around your waist and lifted you up on the bike as he got on as well. He could feel your shaking and as he started up the bike, he grunted in your ear to try and comfort you. He knew this must be terrifying to you. You had never went out into the normal world, and while he couldn't remember it, he was stronger than you. He was built to be a fighter and he could deal with anyone coming his way. You weren't built like that. Plus, Bucky knew you were a lot younger than him. He knew he was old, though he didn't look it.

As the bike roared to life, gunshots began to ring out, causing a little squeak to come out of your mouth. Bucky began to ride off, his body hunched above you. His chest was resting on your back and his jacket was hiding your body. He was keeping you as hidden as possible, hoping that this would help keep a stray bullet from hitting you. You had been shot once or twice before, which caused a rage in Bucky that he wasn't used to. The one's who had shot you didn't leave walking.

You had to shut your eyes to keep yourself from throwing up because of the sharp turns Bucky was making. Normally, you didn't have to make a getaway like this. You normally stayed hidden on missions so there was no need to try and outrun someone. Even with your eyes shut, you could still hear the sharp whistle of the wind and feel the world around you move as a sharp turn was made.

You didn't know how long you were on the bike, but you knew no one was following you anymore. You had heard gunshots when Bucky removed his good arm from around that. That just left his metal arm which was holding onto the handle. Your hand was underneath his metal one, a small comfort to you. All you wanted to do was run, but you couldn't. You couldn't run home because you didn't have a home anymore.

The bike pulled up to an abandoned building, rolling through the doorway. It was dirty and seemed like homeless people might have been living there at sometime. After a quick check to make sure you were alone, Bucky set up a good place for you to rest. He sat against a wall and wrapped his one arm around you, keeping you close to him. During the entire time from getting on the bike to him finishing up his check, he hadn't spoken. Neither had you. The silence had consumed both of you.

"Bucky..." You whimpered his name out quietly and looked up to him, "What are we going to do? We don't have a home anymore..."

"That was never home." He growled out, his voice deep and gravely.

"Where are we going to live?"

"I'll figure that out, okay? Right now, you need to try to go to sleep. You know that when you get tired, your powers start acting up."

He was right. Whenever your emotions got too out of control, so did your powers. You would appear and disappear at random times. This happened the most when you were angry. Whenever you got into a fight with a HYDRA agent, you would keep disappearing during the fight. They never liked to get into fights with you because it would normally end with you crying and Bucky swooping in and breaking their legs.

He has always been protective of you. Even when he forgot about you, he still had an underlying emotion and need to protect you. HYDRA had programmed it into him after the mindwipes. They knew how close the two of you were and wanted Bucky to continue doing his job. They also wanted Bucky to remember how much he cared for you so they would be able to hurt you if they needed to get to him.

Bucky thought about this as you leaned your head on his shoulder. They were going to be hunting the two of you down. He wondered if he did the right choice. Was there even a right choice? No one was going to be happy no matter what he did, so why did it matter? Yet, he didn't want you to be scared anymore. You may be a women now and he may view you as that, but he will never be able to forget the little girl who was scared of thunderstorms. He wouldn't forget that because HYDRA couldn't make him anymore.

You shivered and he quickly took his jacket off and forced you to wear it. You tried to refuse it, but he wasn't having any of it. He made you put your arms through the sleeves Now with the warmth of his jacket, you quickly drifted off to sleep. Bucky didn't want to go to sleep but knew that he needed to, because if he didn't then he would be no help to you in the morning. He didn't need a lot, just an hour.

He held his knife in his free hand which wasn't around your body and was ready to fight off anyone who tried to attack the two of you. He wouldn't let anyone hurt you anymore, even if that meant he had to stay as the Winter Soldier. He might not remember who he was, but that was okay. Maybe he didn't need to remember...All he had to worry about now is keeping you safe.

The next few days were chaotic, because you kept running into HYDRA agents, but after a few days, they stopped.
